One of the biggest mistakes a homeowner can make when they replace a window screen as part of a DIY window replacement project is to not measure it correctly. A poorly fitting one will not provide much protection against bugs in your home because it will gape along the sides or the top. In order for you to ensure this does not happen to you, measure the unit carefully before you order your replacements.
If you have a small hole, you may patch it while you are waiting to replace it. This is only a temporary fix since the holes indicate that it is time to replace the entire unit. For very small holes, you may use epoxy or a clear calk to patch it. Simply spread the epoxy or calking into the hole and allow to dry. Although it will show, it is an excellent temporary fix until you can get the replacement completed.
For larger holes, you may create a patch by using a section of screen that is cut to fit around the hole. Begin by cutting a section that is slightly larger than the hole or tear. Pull a few wires out around the patch and then bend the edges of the patch to a ninety degree angle. The easiest way to do this is to use a board or other surface to bend the sides against.
Once you have the wires bent at a ninety degree angle, put the bent wires into the screen around the hole and bend them back against it on the other side. Next, take the small wires you removed and weave them throughout the patch to secure it in place. This patch will last until you are able to replace a window screen. Be sure you inspect all of your window screens for holes regularly to ensure they do not have holes in them. If one of the screens needs to be replaced, they may all need it if they were installed at the same time.
Full Screen Replacements
You may replace a window screen in a variety of ways. There are full replacements that are already assembled or you can purchase the parts and build your own. If the windows on the home are a standard size, the full unit is the ideal choice because they are extremely easy to install. You simply remove the old one from the tracks and pop the new one in place.
If your home has odd sized windows, in order to replace a window screen you may need to build it yourself or hire a contractor to do it for you. You may purchase the parts to build a replacement by shopping online. There are even kits available for purchase that come with all the necessary items you need.
Before you purchase a replacement, be sure to measure the window carefully. You will want to measure the height and width both in three locations, top, bottom, middle, right side, left side, and middle. Use the smallest measurement for ordering the replacement. The replacement screens for each window are different so be sure to order the proper one for the window you have. For instance, if the windows are aluminum, order an aluminum style for the replacement.
To replace a screen inside an existing frame, begin by removing the unit from the window. Next, remove the piping that holds the old one in place inside the frame. Examine the piping for wear and tear. You should replace it if it is damaged. Once the old screen is removed, you can put the new one in place and use a spline roller to put the piping back into the channel against it. Remove any excess by cutting it away.
If you replace a window screen in a home, you can keep the bugs out while still enjoying the fresh air. Before you replace a window screen, be sure to order the proper size and style for the screens you have to replace.
